If you’ve ever had to call upon our community’s emergency services, you know how valuable they can be. No matter what type of call we’re responding to, your area ambulance, fire and police responders take great pride in the service the provide.
We’d like to invite you to join us in making this community a safer, healthier place by volunteering at the Irondequoit Ambulance.
What sorts of volunteers are needed?
We are always in need medics, drivers and support members.
- Medics are certified as New York State emergency medical technicians, and provide patient care throughout every call.
- Drivers provide a safe, comfortable ride to and from the scene, and assist medics with equipment, patient handling and communication at the scene of a call.
- Support members participate in crucial "behind the scenes" roles relating to administration, community relations, and fund raising.
Support memberships are perfect for business owners that want to donate their time and skilled resources to "non-road" functions.
What are the requirements for volunteers?
We require that medics and drivers provide a minimum of 12 service hours per month. These hours are required to be a member in a voting position; however we fully understand that these hours cannot always be maintained and ask that you simply try to maintain your monthly hours.
When, where and with whom will I work?
We are a 24-7-365 operation. You may work with any given number of volunteers or career staff personnel. You choose your hours and your shifts.
Our facility is equipped with bunk rooms, full bath, kitchen and living room and will be available for your disposal during your shifts.
What training is provided? Is there any cost to me?
We provide all required training free of charge. The minimum required training at Irondequoit Ambulance is a current CPR certification.
Drivers must complete the New York State emergency vehicle operation course, an eight-hour seminar on the legal, safety and operational aspects of driving ambulances and other emergency vehicles.
Medics may obtain any New York State Department of Health certification, but training to the EMT-basic level is required in order to act as the medic-in-charge aboard an ambulance.
This certification takes about 4 months to complete, and classes are offered frequently throughout Monroe, Livingston and Ontario counties. These classes are covered and paid for by the State of NY upon completion.
In addition to completing the required classroom training for medics and drivers, We maintains a “clearance” (or precepting) process whereby new trainees in each position work with experienced personnel to gain the street-smarts necessary to handle calls without supervision. The length of this process varies for each individual, but most people need 8-12 calls to “clear” in a particular position (depending on their confidence level).
I already work for another ambulance or fire company - can my previous experience be counted?
We will gladly recognize the experience and skills of those who already serve (or have served in the past) with other agencies; however to maintain consistancy within the organization each member must go through the same training process.
How does Irondequoit work with other area responders?
Frequently we work hand-in-hand with local fire and police services. In some situations we assists these responders with their duties, and at other times receive their help. We primarily cover the Ridge-Culver and Laurelton Fire Districts and have several mutual aid agreements with surrounding agencies.
